Case study Questions

Please use this thread to post questions you have about the case study assignment. I'll address them here, so that we can all benefit from each others' approaches and questions.

  1. What kinds of assessment are considered OK to consider when evaluating our student? For the student I am thinking of, I have a written "final product" - an essay that we asked students to write about themselves using six traits of writing. Is this product-based assessment all right to consider?

  2. Jessica - The assessments need to be formative in nature, that is used to inform overall understanding of the young person and inform instruction. It should consider developmental aspects of reading and writing to be a good fit.

  4. Dr. Patel,
As a secondary educator I find it difficult to access time and space to interview and get to know my high school students. I think that the time we are given with our 120+ students is very limited. I am concerned and I think that other secondary teachers may share this concern. Do you have any suggestions in ways to find time and space to get to know a student?

    Thank You.

  5. Marina,

First of all, my apologies for the late response to this post. Yes, the time secondary teachers have with their students is extremely limited. I don't think that the case study interviews are easily absorbed by the schedule of secondary schools. As we've discussed many, many times in class, these schedules are not designed for humanizing interactions. In fact, quite the contrary.

I expect that as a graduate student in the course, you'll make use of time before, after school, perhaps during other down times, if you are teaching full-time. If you are not teaching full-time with a full load, then this question isn't as relevant. In either case, you may also want to focus on a pupil who is not in your school, using evening and weekend time to do the groundwork of the case study.

Please feel free to reach out to me by email if you need some more assistance in thinking this through.

    lp.
